Cancer treatment is always based on the type of cancer a patient has and its stage or extent of spread. Cancer research is continually conducted in search for the best cure for cancer. Through these researches, cancer information is gathered, improving cancer understanding and finding out better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat different cancer types.

There are various cancer treatment options, some more effective than others depending on the form and stage of the cancer, and to be effective they should be integrated in a cancer therapy plan.

Some of these are:

Surgery – the foundation of any Cancer Treatment is usually done to diagnose cancer and treat it to relieve the symptoms it causes. If in the form of malignant tumor, it is safe to “cut-out” tumor and any area around it that may have been affected. Surgery is not possible to do in cases that cancer has spread to other areas in the body.

Radiotherapy – the use of high energy x-rays or radiation in Cancer Treatment. It works by destroying cancer cells in a particular area. Although normal cells can be damaged during the treatment, they are able to repair themselves.

Chemotherapy –  uses medicines to destroy cancer cells. Unlike surgery ad radiotherapy that focuses only on a certain area, chemo is a type of treatment commonly used if the disease has spread to other parts of the body.

Biological therapy – is a Cancer Treatment that uses proteins to boost the body’s immune system. This causes the immune system to produce lymphocytes, T-cell and B-cell, which kills and attacks cancer cells.

Hormonal therapy – is  used to treat cancers that are dependent on hormones to grow and spread. Therapy may include medications that suppress or interferes action of cancer causing hormones.

Clinical trials – are used in researching new ways of treating cancer. Advantage in joining is that a patient may receive the latest and best medicines there is with closely monitoring throughout the trial. Disadvantage is that drugs used are not still approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The treatment approach may involve using one or a combination of the above options depending on the patient’s condition or cancer stage. Also the type of cancer has an impact: breast cancer and skin cancer might involve completely different techniques. There is high number of cancer survivors because of the continually evolving or advancements in treating cancer.
